"Star Trek: Discovery" has found its captain in Jason Isaacs, the former "Dig" star. Though a new captain has been found, it seems the TV series would do away with a "Star Trek" tradition of having a cast from the previous series cameo as a way to pass the torch.

According to a report from Variety, Isaacs will be playing the captain of the Starship Discovery, Captain Lorca. The role will be opposite of Sonequa Martin-Green's character, who is said to go by the name "Number One."

The report said that this TV series will be Isaacs latest streaming series, following "The OA" of Netflix. Isaacs will also be one of the most high-profile actors to be cast in the show.

He joins Martin-Green, who also stars in AMC's "The Walking Dead," James Frain, who plays Spock's father, Michelle Yeoh, as the captain of Starship Shenzhou, and Anthony Rapp as a space fungus expert. Other cast includes Maulik Pancholy as chief medical officer of Starship Shenzhou Dr. Nambue, Sam Vartholomeus, as junior officer Ensign Conner assigned to the Starship Shenzhou, and Terry Serpico, as the high-ranking official of Starfleet Admiral Anderson.

The new show will be set in the "Prime" Star Trek universe, which is the same universe as the previous TV series and the original 10 films, according to the Nerdist. It will also be set 10 years before the original "Star Trek" series.

The new show will focus on the adventures of the Starship Discovery, which is led by a Lieutenant Commander (Martin-Green's character). Since "Star Trek: Discover" is set in the same universe as the previous other "Star Trek" series, there has been speculation that a character from the previous series would cameo on this one.

A report from Redshirts Always Die (via FansSided) said that this has been a tradition for new Star Trek series to have an important character from the previous series to appear on the new one as a proverbial passing of the "torch."

Jackson DeForest Kelly, who played Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy in "Star Trek: The Original Series" made a cameo in "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in "The Next Generation" also made a cameo in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."

Unfortunately, the report said that is unlikely for the new series to follow the tradition, though they should do it as a fan service to attract the core fans to the series. "Star Trek: Discovery" is expected to premiere this fall. Check out the teaser trailer for the latest "Star Trek" series.
