According to the AP, state troopers and local law enforcement agencies took Garcia into custody after they converged on the area north of Amarillo near the Canadian River and U.S. Highway 287.

The AP reports that at 3:40 a.m. on Monday, Garcia fled the prison by scaling one of its fences.
A corrections officer on patrol at the Neal Unit in Amarillo was able to spot Garcia on a razor-wire fence before he fully escaped. Clark said the officer fired several shots at Garcia but he continued to climb over the fence and was eventually able to escape fully.

Chron.com reports that the hunt for Garcia involved tracking dogs, Potter County sheriff's deputies and Amarillo police together with corrections officers.

According to the AP, Garcia has been serving a 25-year term for a murder conviction in Harris County. He fatally beat a man with a piece of wood in Harris County and he began serving his prison sentence in June 2010.
Court documents said Garcia pleaded guilty to the 2008 killing. He reportedly accepted the 25-year term. According to prison records, he wasn't eligible for parole until 2021.
