The Dubai fireworks 2014 was record breaking. The extravaganza set the world record for the largest ever pyrotechnic display on New Year's Eve. With more than half a million fireworks going off, the display made the Guinness World Record book.

"Ten months in planning, over 500,000 fireworks were used during the display which lasted around six minutes, with Guinness World Records adjudicators on hand to confirm that a new record had been set," the Guinness website says.

The display took up 58.4 miles of the Dubai coast. Dubai is known for setting records and going big. It is also home to Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower., the world's largest man-made island and one of the busiest airports in the world.
The record was broken in the first minute alone, breaking the previous record set by Kuwait. The hour-long show contained 77,282 fireworks in 2011.

The main display in Dubai took place at the Burj Khalifa and the Atlantis hotel.
The display was designed by US Fireworks company Grucci. They used 100 computers and 200 technicians to synchronize the display which cost about $6 million.

Dubai set its last record in May 2012 with the world's tallest residential building, the Dubai Princess Tower.

Dubai is aiming to become the premiere New Year's destinations with its grand displays.
