Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon broke a major record for sales. The games were able to shatter a two year-old Nintendo sales record.

According to Forbes magazine and gaming websites GameSpot and Polygon, the 3DS games set the record for Nintendo's fastest-selling game in the Americas. Nintendo announced officially that Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon are the fastest-selling Nintendo games ever in the Americas in its history.

The games from the popular Pokemon franchise had already been the most pre-ordered. They are now at a pace to sell more than all of Nintendo's previous games. Nintendo of America officially announced that Pokemon Sun and Moon are the fastest-selling games Nintendo has ever released in the Americas. The company noted that they were already the most pre-ordered game in its history.

Nintendo's declaration that both of the latest Pokemon games broke the sales record, was made two weeks after their release. In those two weeks, Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon sold more than 3.7 million units. In the company's press release, Nintendo announced that they had sold that many copies across the Americas since the games were released.

The company noted that the combined total of Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon copies sold in two weeks was an increase over the previous record holders over a similar span of time. The previous record holders were Pokemon X and Pokemon Y which were launched in 2013.

The sales figure of the new Pokemon games was an increase of 85 percent over that of the older games in the franchise. Pokemon X and Y were the fastest selling Nintendo games of all time, before Pokemon Sun and Moon came out. Pokemon X and Pokemon Y sold more than 4 million units worldwide in only their first weekend since their launch.

Another game may have helped Pokemon Sun and Moon achieve their record. The popularity and attention that Pokemon Go had may have contributed to an increase in awareness of the Pokemon franchise and generated interest in the latest Pokemon games which pushed sales for Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon.
