A deaf couple from Texas are not happy with American Airlines after they received a note attached to their lost luggage calling them "deaf and dumb."

Angela Huckaby and James Moehle, 34, of Houston went to Hawaii for their first vacation in 16 years, but they lost their luggage. However that wasn't the most disappointing part. When their bags finally showed up on Sunday,  it had a not attached that read "Please text. Deaf and dumb."

"It was just outrageous and cruel and unnecessary," Moehle's mother, Kay Moehle, told KRTK. "He's deaf but he's not dumb."

The couple wrote to American Airlines to tell them about the incident and to demand an apology and action to be taken against the person who wrote the note.

"I assure you that neither of us are 'Dumb!' Rather, we are both hard-working individuals and responsible parents. We certainly deserve to be treated with dignity and respect," James Moehle, an air conditioning and heating technician wrote in his letter. "We demand not only an immediate apology from American Airlines, but also that disciplinary action be taken against the employee who wrote the unacceptable note."

American Airlines quickly responded to the couple, saying "We apologize to Mr. Moehle and Ms. Huckaby. It was clearly a very poor choice of words. We're confident there was no ill will, but we'll be looking into this further and will be following up with our team members at IAH and the contractor that provides our baggage delivery services."

However Moehle and his mother said the apology wasn't good enough and that the airline isn't taking the issue seriously.

"To me, it's not enough. They have not satisfied me, nor have they, to my knowledge, satisfied my son either," Mrs. Moehle said. So far their messages have been dismissive. I want to hear something like 'we take this seriously, we are investigating, and we will get back to you."

"I don't even know if they take it seriously," James Moehle said. "I just want them to not ever do that again to someone else."
"Deaf and dumb" was used to describe people who couldn't speak many decades ago and has since been deemed offensive.

Moehle said he had never been treated in such a way. He lost his hearing when he was 17-months old due to spinal meningitis.
