A flight from Tokyo to New York was diverted to Anchorage, Alaska on Monday after a passenger went crazy on board and had to be tied down to his seat by flight attendants.

Nobuya Michael Ochinero, 38, was on the 12.5-hour nonstop flight from Tokyo to New York's JFK airport. He seemed volatile when he boarded the All Nippon Airways Flight 10. Chuck Lustig, a Human Rights Watch deputy executive director was seated in front of the man.

"He was berserk from the moment he got on the plane. He was yelling and screaming, spitting on the floor. He was smacking the back of my seat and other passengers' seats," Lustig said according to the Anchorage Daily News. Lustig said Ochinero started to harass the flight attendants and was yelling. "It was more like crazy grunting. Nothing really intelligible."

The flight attendants tried to get Ochinero to calm down but their efforts were useless. Eventually the crew and other passengers devised a plan to subdue the man.

The staff used zip-tie handcuffs that were on the Boeing 777 to tie Ochinero to his seat. Lustig said the man tried to spit at other passenger and the crew after being subdued. "He was struggling from time to time. He'd stop and talk to people and struggle some more."

Two passengers who helped tie Ochinero doen guarded him for about an hour our two until the pilot announced that Flight 10 would be diverted to Anchorage since the passenger posed a security concern. At that point, everyone on the plane knew what was happening.

Some passengers were shaken by the incident but said it was handled well. "It was a little scary. But the crew handled it amazingly well," Lustig said. He wasn't sure if the man was drunk or just mentally unstable.

Ochinero was arrested by federal agents and police at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport after the flight landed. The airline is gathering information and is investigating. As of Monday afternoon, no federal charges were filed against Ochinero. He is being held at the Anchorage Correctional Complex.

No crew members or passengers were hurt in the incident. The flight continued on to New York without further disruptions a few hours later.
