Colorado Springs Airport Installs Amnesty Boxes For Marijuana Carriers

Just because marijuana is now legal in Colorado, that doesn't mean it's allowed on a plane. It is illegal to bring pot onto a plane, so Colorado Springs airport is installing amnesty boxes for those who may not realize it before they get into trouble.

Colorado law has made recreational marijuana legal, but not everywhere. It is legal to leave the drug in a parked car at the airport, however it is prohibited to bring it inside. Airport officials are encouraging people to leave their drugs behind, but they're also giving those who bring it in a chance to get rid of it so that they don't get into trouble and miss their flights. This applies to those who forgot they had the drug on them or those who weren't aware of the rules before getting to the airport. The amnesty boxes started being installed on Wednesday, KKTV reports.

There are already similar boxes at the airport for people to surrender things like lighters, pocket knives and large fluid containers. These new amnesty boxes will give people a chance to turn their pot in as well.

Denver International Airport has also banned marijuana, but there are no amnesty boxes at that facility.

KKTV-TV says that the ban at airports applies to both recreational and medical marijuana. Any passenger who is caught trying to bring marijuana onto a plane could face a fine of up to $2,500 and even jail time. It doesn't matter if it is in your pocket, carry-on luggage or even checked luggage.
