Cathay Pacific Airways has finally bid goodbye to some of its Boeing 747-400s which fly between London and Hong Kong, Breaking Travel News reported Thursday.

Widely known for having one of the youngest fleet in the world, Cathay Pacific Airways has made the brave gesture of replacing its Boeing 747-400s with its new Boeing 777-300ERs. The Boeing 777-300ER is more fuel efficient and environment friendly, according to the said airline management.

Cathay Pacific has gone a long way ever since it engaged with Boeing for its first direct order for the 747-200 series. On its eighteenth year celebration since it was founded, Cathay has made its millionth passenger mark. Today, the airline carries about one million passengers each month.

The new Boeing houses new long-haul economy, premium economy, business class and a revamped first class cabin, multiple sources reported.

"The Boeing 777-300ER is a superb aircraft that has already significantly enhanced our operations on key long-haul routes, and we are delighted to be introducing it for all of our flights between London and Hong Kong," Head of Sales and Marketing of Cathay Pacific Roberto Abbondio said. "We have been very impressed by the operating economics of these aircraft, while their high efficiency has resulted in a reduced environmental impact... the 777-300ER will play a crucial role in our operations in the years to come."

Apart from this, within this year, Cathay Pacific has also launched its fifth flight between London and Hong Kong, which technically totals the number of flight per week into 25.

"We are committed to giving passengers more reasons to choose Cathay Pacific, and are proud to offer customers not only added flexibility and convenience when travelling to Hong Kong and beyond into the Far East and Australasia, but also one of the newest fleets in the world," Abbondio added. "This is just one of the many latest developments for the airline; we have also increased frequencies on routes from Hong Kong to Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam."

It can be noted that Cathay Pacific waved farewell to three out of its 21 747-400s in 2012. This year, it is retiring six more from its fleet. Moreover, the airline revealed that the rest of its 747-4000s and 11 A340s are also progressively retiring within this decade due to traffic growth, financial viability and the rising fuel prices.

Cathay Pacific Airways promises that it is going to replace these aircrafts with more cost efficient models in the coming years.
