Summer is fast approaching (or, in some countries, summer is already here), and that only means one thing. Time to head to the water!

If snorkeling or diving is on your to-do list every summer, there's one place in Asia that you won't regret adding to your bucket list.

Here's why Indonesia's Raja Ampat Islands deserves your attention.

Raja Ampat is technically an archipelago located in the northwest tip of Indonesia's Southwest Papua province. It has four main islands and 1,500 small islands, so if island hopping is you're thing, you've got a lot to choose from.

This also means that to get around, you'll need a boat, so Lonely Planet recommends picking one island as your homebase.

Among the recommended islands are Kri, Waigeo, Gam, and Mansaur.

According to Oceanic Society, there are 1,400 fish species and 550+ species of reef-building corals here. You can also abundant megafauna and macrofauna in this area.

So, if you're one who cannot let summer pass by without going snorkeling or diving, Raja Ampat is the place to do it in.

Examples of dive sites that you can chose from are Cape Kri, Mike's Point, and Blue Ridge. It should be noted, however, that many dive sites require more than a PADI certification, so make sure to check beforehand if it's possible for you to dive at the site you're eyeing.

No Shortage of Activities, Even on Land

If snorkeling and diving are not your thing, that's no problem. Raja Ampat still has much to offer you.

Many islands offer short hikes that lead to awe-inspiring views. Examples of places you can head to for a hike are Piaynemo and Wayag.

If you're hoping to spot the Red Bird of Paradise, make sure to head to Gam.

Despite the abundant marine life found here, Raja Ampat remains to be one of the most underrated destinations. There aren't many tourists who head here, and there aren't many locals who live here either.

So, if you happen to feel like avoiding large crowds of tourists and locals alike, this place is perfect for you.
