Activision has finally announced the "Call of Duty: WWII," its latest game in the franchise with more details coming in on April 26 during a live stream official unveiling. The newest game from the franchise shows that Activision will be returning to its roots after continuously producing sci-fi shooters.

According to a report from The Verge, the revealed game setting for the latest in the "Call of Duty" franchise has already been in the rumour mill since last month. Sledgehammer Games will be the one to develop the new game.

The developer was responsible for "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" and "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare." No other detail was revealed aside from the setting, the title and the studio that will develop the game.

That will all change, though, on April 26 when Activision will officially unveil "Call of Duty: WWII" via live streaming. The live stream is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET or 10 a.m. PT.

The report said that the latest version of "Call of Duty" is a return to its roots as the World War 2 setting is basically the same setting as the first three games of the franchise. The reason Activision reverted to its roots was due to the lack of appeal that the sci-fi settings of "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare" had with fans, according to Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg.

Erik Kain of Forbes is one of those who welcomed Activision's return to its roots. He said that with the company having three studios developing the game for them, they have no reason to keep on coming out with a science fiction setting for "Call of Duty."

He did note it will be interesting to see how Sledgehammer Games will turn back the clock with the multiplayer setting of "Call of Duty: WWII," considering the sci-fi settings had wall running and double jumping.
