When it was first announced, Xbox One exclusive "Scalebound" got a lot of gamers excited.  The action role-playing video game which was set to be developed by PlatinumGames with Microsoft Studios, promised a game with all the Japanese RPG elements sorted.  The news that the game was cancelled left a lot of fans disappointed.

According to Eurogamer, multiple sources have confirmed that Microsoft and developer Platinum Games have parted ways, leading the game's cancellation. Work concluded before the end of 2016, reports say.

"After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for Scalebound. We're working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including Halo Wars 2, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves and other great experiences," part of the official statement said.

According to reports, working on the game took a serious knock last autumn after several senior members of the development team were forced to take a month away from the pressure of the project's heavy workload.  When the members returned, the "Scalebound" was now behind schedule.

The game was directed by iconic Twitter blocker and "Bayonetta" director Hideki Kamiya, and it had been in development for so long.  About three years ago, Microsoft first announced the game during the Xbox press conference at E3 2014.  It even rose to the top of dozens of "Most Anticipated Games" lists but was delayed multiple times.

No updates have been made about "Scalebound" in recent months, leading game experts believe that there could be something wrong. Originally, "Scalebound" was set to be released sometime this year. The game was pushed back from its 2016 release window, Digital Trends reported.  The game was even recently highlighted in this year's E3, but it had to be eventually canceled.  It is currently unclear if Platinum will revive the game.
