As part of their new pricing strata, rumors that United Airlines will be charging extra costs for those who purchase the Basic Economy seat plan over the use of the overhead locker bins. This was quickly met by criticisms of irate passengers.

Those who will buy the least expensive ticket can only be allowed to travel with single luggage with sizes of not more than 9" x 10" x 17" and must be placed under the seat. If passengers would like to use the locker the person must upgrade his seat to the regular class.

United Airlines CEO, Oscar Munoz, said in a press release that the airlines would like to get the basics right for the price-sensitive customer, thus the creation of the new feature. "We will not only be more flexible when it comes to price, but we'll also be more efficient operationally by preceding pre-assigned seating, priority boarding, upgrading, and the option for last minute changes," he added.

The airlines believe that by reducing the number of passengers checking bags at the gate, the company can deliver the one amenity that all customers at every price care most about - reliability and on-time performance along with a smoother boarding experience.

Many citizens took to social media to vent out their anger to the new feature. However, the airlines clarified that they wouldn't be charging fees for the use of the lockers for Basic Economy passengers. In response to criticism, United Airlines said, "We will not be charging for overhead bin space. Basic Economy is a lower-priced option that only allows a personal item."

In spite of making it clear, it seems that people are quick to reiterate the issue. "No," the company tweeted again, "We are not charging a fee for overhead bin space for Basic Economy. If you'd like overheads, purchase regular."
