According to USA Today, Beyonce's Lemonade is the Recording Academy voters' drink of choice. Her genre-smashing behemoth is the top choice for the 2017 Grammy Awards nominations including song, record and album of the year, and the top three Grammy accolades for the visual album Lemonade - a collection of songs about feminism, empowerment, and race - and her hit song "Formation".

Aside from Beyonce's defiant lead single Formation song and record of the year nominations, Hold Up is nominated for best pop solo performance, Freedom (with Kendrick Lamar) is up for best sung/rap performance and Don't Hurt Yourself (with Jack White) is contending for best rock performance. Beyonce revealed that her Lemonade album will be an HBO special this spring for one hour. The said album is also nominated for best urban contemporary album and music film, while the visual of Formation is contending for best music video. Beyonce's Lemonade is joined in the category by Drake's Views, Adele's 25, Sturgill Simpson's A Sailor's Guide to Earth and Justin Bieber's Purpose.

Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said in a USA Today interview that the multi-genre nominations of Beyonce's Lemonade mean that artists today have greater creative freedom. "They are feeling very empowered and willing to take chances", Portnow said.

The 35-year-old R&B singer has been nominated 62 times in the entire history of Grammy awards and has won 20 awards from Grammy over her two-decade career. Rapper Kanye West, who received eight nominations this year for his album The Life of Pablo, has been nominated in Grammy 68 times over his career, and won 21 Grammy awards, NBC reported.

British singer Adele, on the other hand, was up for the top three Grammy awards with her album 25 and hit ballad Hello, and has a total of five Grammy nominations. In 2012, Adele swept three top categories with her album 19.
