Mapping Out The Perfect New Zealand Road Trip

When mapping out a road trip around the rugged mountains and plains of New Zealand, adventurers should carefully plan out their route as to see everything that the beautiful country can offer. Travelers are often caught off guard on how big New Zealand actually is, so for those who are planning a road trip to the country in the near future, here are some of the popular routes and tips for the perfect adventure.

First thing is that the proper mode of transportation is essential to the entire trip. If the trip is scheduled for the summer time in New Zealand, (which is winter months for those in the Northern Hemisphere) then renting a van as opposed to an SUV is more cost efficient, Young Adventures reports.

A van gets better miles per gallon ratio than most SUV's, and the terrain that is mostly travelled on during these months can be accessed by both types of cars. However, if the plans call for winter months and ski resorts are in the plans, then an SUV is more suitable.

The next part of the trip that must be taken into consideration is the route that should be taken. There are several popular routes taken by many adventurers, some more traveled than others. However, the most popular route is Auckland to Wellington, Travel Nation claims.

With this route, travelers can take in many of New Zealand's most popular sites. These sites include many of the places where director Peter Jackson shot his "Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" movies. However, these majestic mountains are not the only sites to see on this route, there are also thermal pools, as well several popular beaches that travelers can also visit, according to the New Zealand Tourism Guide.

Finally, the most important part of planning any trip is having the right people along for the adventure. While some prefer to travel alone, it is always better to travel with those closest to you so you can have someone to share the experience with.
