Serey Die, midfielder for the Ivory Coast, broke down in tears as his country's national anthem played during the team's World Cup 2014 match against Colombia. Early reports said that Die broke down in tears because his father died just two hours before the big game. That was a hoax. Die's emotion's were real, but  his father didn't die two hours before the game. In fact he died a decade a go.

Early reports claimed that Die was crying because his father died just two hours before the game. However Die took to Instagram to say that wasn't true as his father died in 2004. He was just overcome with emotion over the fact that he was at the World Cup. In a message in French that he posted with a photo of his jersey, Die said, "Hello, I just want to say that it's wrong what they all say, that I was moved because of my dad, but he died in 2004 and it was just the excitement of being in a World Cup and serving my country, Ivory Coast. I never thought one day I would be at this level of competition."

The rumor about Die's father passing just before the match was furthered by Colombia's injured forward Radamel Falcao who posted to Die's Twitter, saying "A big hug for Serey Die today he was a great example for all of us who love this sport." Die may have been thinking of his father before he played the big match but his father didn't die just before it happened.

Die also apologized for his team's loss. He said that he made a mistake which led to Colombia scoring a second goal and taking the lead to win 2-1. "Sorry for my mistake, I apologize for having disappointed you. I'll come out on top. God bless you - finished," he said.
