Drunk, Unruly Passenger Forces American Airlines Flight to London to Divert to Canada

Feb 18, 2014 11:55 PM EST

An American Airlines international flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Newfoundland due to a drunk, unruly passenger.

The Boeing 777 was flying to London from Chicago on Saturday when the incident took place. The flight was carrying 187 passengers, but one of them, a 35-year-old American man refused to follow the crew's orders, airline spokesman Kent Powell said, according to the Associated Press.

According to the Global Post, the man was drunk and was cursing and arguing with other passengers. He also refused to stay in his seat. According to constable Sheldon Walsh, the man didn't want to listen to the flight crew and at one point, he became violent and damaged a plane seat.

The man caused the crew to decide to make an emergency landing at Gander International Airport in Canada just after midnight. Once the man was removed from the flight, it continued on to London and landed early Sunday.

Refusing to follow instructions on a flight is a criminal offense. The man is facing charges including causing a disturbance on an aircraft and mischief. The man will appeared in Gander provincial court on Tuesday for a bail hearing.
