In a recent survey by Betfair Casino, Donegal has secured the third position as the most favored staycation spot in Ireland. The survey reveals that 22 percent of Irish holidaymakers prefer the scenic beauty of Donegal for their domestic getaways. 

This picturesque region is famous for its stunning landscapes and peaceful environment, making it a perfect escape from the harsh life.

Galway topped the list as the number one staycation destination in Ireland this year, with 37 percent of respondents choosing the west coast city for its breathtaking coastlines and vibrant community life. 

Following closely was Kerry, capturing the hearts of 29 percent of participants, appreciated for its unique blend of beautiful views and cultural richness.

Dublin and Cork were also among the top picks, garnering 18 percent and 17 percent respectively, illustrating the diverse preferences of Irish travelers, as per Donegal News

These cities are known for their rich histories and lively atmospheres. Other locations, such as Killarney and Wexford, were also popular, with 16 percent and 15 percent of the votes.

For those looking beyond Ireland for their vacation plans, the Maldives emerged as the top international destination. Known for its idyllic beaches and romantic ambiance, the Maldives attracted 35 percent of the survey's respondents. 

The Caribbean and Santorini were also high on the list, chosen by 31 percent and 22 percent of holiday seekers, respectively.

The rise in popularity of staycations within Ireland reflects a growing trend among locals to explore and appreciate their own country's natural beauty and cultural heritage. 

With its captivating landscapes and serene atmosphere, Donegal continues to be a top choice for many Irish residents looking to unwind and reconnect with nature.

Fourth Best Region to Visit in 2024 by Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet has recognized Donegal as one of the top regions in the world to explore in 2024, placing it fourth on their prestigious list. This ranking is part of the travel guide's Best in Travel 2024 collection, highlighting the most exciting travel destinations globally.

The Irish Times shared that the Trans Dinarica Cycling route in the western Balkans clinched the top spot, with Australia's Kangaroo Island and Tuscany in Italy also making the top three. 

Donegal was noted for its dramatic sea cliffs at Sliabh Liag, the highest in Europe, and its extensive unspoiled coastal trails along the Wild Atlantic Way. The region's ancient forts, vibrant musical traditions, and the rich heritage of the Irish language were highlighted as key factors in its selection.

Alice Mansergh, chief executive designate at Tourism Ireland, expressed that this recognition would boost international interest in Donegal and Ireland as prime travel destinations for the upcoming year. 

She also acknowledged the contributions of those in Donegal's tourism and hospitality sectors to this achievement.

Tourism Ireland plans to promote this accolade extensively in the coming weeks, aiming to attract more visitors to explore Donegal's cultural and natural beauty.
