Seoul Metro official Chung Soo-young also said that the accident happened because of a signal failure and that two subway cars were derailed due to the Seoul subway crash.

A 26-year-old office worker named Lee Dong-hyeon riding on the train said of his experience on the Seoul subway crash, "I fell forwards maybe two or three meters. It was like tripping over when running really fast."

According to Reuters, the last major accident on a subway system in South Korea was in the year 2003 when 192 were reportedly killed in a subway fire in the city of Daegu. The incident has prompted major safety improvements to the system after that.
