A Lanai plane crash resulted in three deaths Wednesday night. The Maui County chartered plane crashed just outside of Lanai Airport. Three others were injured.

Among the deceased are the pilot and two Department of Planning employees. Two other planning employees are in critical condition and a deputy attorney for Corporation Counsel is in serious condition. The three injured survivors were taken by air transportation to Queens Medical Center following the crash, Hawaii News Now reports.

The passengers were on Lanai earlier Wednesday for a Lanai Planning Commission staff meeting scheduled to end at 8:30 p.m. Maui County chartered a return flight on Maui Air set to leave around 9:05 p.m. At 9:23 p.m., emergency dispatch received a 911 call from one of the passengers. Emergency crews responded to the crash area in Miki Basin -- just one mile from Lanai Airport.

Fire crews had to put out a small brushfire at the crash site due to flames from the crash. The man who called 911 was the deputy attorney for Corporation Counsel. He said he pulled two of the other passengers away from the fire since they couldn't move by themselves. All three of the survivors suffered from burns. Maui police, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation and Safety Board, are investigating the crash.

Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa released a statement about the crash, saying  "Maui County is in mourning after we lost two of our own last night in a plane crash. Our condolences also go out to the family of the pilot who also died in the crash. Ann and I both wish the surviving county workers a speedy recovery."

Some reports say the plane burst into flames shortly after taking off.
