American citizens were given warnings against flying out the Guyana on Caribbean Airlines flights bound for the United States for the next two days according to the U.S. Embassy.

The warning was released by the U.S. Embassy in Guyana because they said it received an unconfirmed threat about certain Caribbean Airlines flights heading to the US. They embassy did not go into specifics, but said the warning was being released as a precaution.

"Out of an abundance of caution, the Embassy advises all U.S. Citizens in Guyana traveling on Caribbean Airlines (CAL) to the United States from Monday, February 10, through Wednesday, February 12, 2014, to make alternate travel arrangements," the embassy said in a statement according to CNN.

The Guyanese government announced on Sunday night that it activated emergency security plans and raised the terror threat level at the main international airport in the country, Cheddi Jagan International Airport, due to the Caribbean Airlines threats. The airline said that it added additional security measures and was taking extra precaution and is cooperating with authorities.

Even though there was a warning, Caribbean Airline threats are operating on a normal scheduel. One of the flights included an early flight to New York City, which is home to many Guyanese expats. The airport released a warning saying, "Passengers and other airport users are asked to be on the lookout for any suspicious activities or occurrences and report same to an airport security official," according to the New York Daily News.

Caribbean Airlines confirmed that it had extra security and released a statement on its website saying, "We thank the traveling public for their understanding of any inconvenience as special security measures have been put in place."

While the warning and added security might be done out of an abundance of caution, Guyana has had terror threats before. In 2007, four men, including Abdul Kadir, a former member of Guyana's parliament, were planning to firebomb JFK airport in New York but their plan was foiled.
