Amanda Bynes has left UCLA Medical Center, where she was being held to receive treatment for serious mental illness, according to TMZ. She has now relocated to a rehabilitation center in Malibu.

The Malibu facility doesn't have the same psychiatric facilities available to UCLA Medical Center, and TMZ reports that Bynes is "still in a desperate state," calling the move "shocking."

The Malibu center, called The Canyon, is popular with celebrities because it's exclusive.

Bynes was being held at UCLA Medical Center under a special hold, called a LPS, which was placed on Bynes due to doctors concern about her well being. She was first admitted in July. An LPS hold is part of the Lanterman-Petris-Short Act of 1967, which allows for mentally unstable patients to be held in a facility against their will for treatment.

Bynes checked into the The Canyon, about three weeks ago, according to TMZ. She rarely interacts with other people and rarely leaves the area she's living in. She has also stopped wearing her wig and is "paranoid" that the paparazzi will find her.

Last week, Bynes lawyer, Gerald Shargel, made a brief court appearance in Manhattan to ask for a "postponement for up to 18 months" while Bynes continues to receive psychiatric treatment, which means she could potentially remain in the facility until 2015.

The hearing was an attempt by Shargel to resolve the case against Bynes, who was accused of throwing a bong out of a window in her New York apartment. Bynes was also charged with reckless endangerment and marijuana possession after the building managers called police when Bynes was smoking in the lobby.

The Canyon was the subject of a lawsuit in 2011 after an employee allegedly sold information about Brooke Mueller, the ex-wife of Charlie Sheen, who was staying at the center for treatment. The lawsuit was settled against the facility with a resulting payout of approximately $250,000.

Bynes was very troubled before being checked into the facility, including problems including failing to appear in court for a misdemeanor charge, possible weight issues and getting into a Twitter feud with singer Rihanna.  She was also the victim of an Internet death hoax that claimed she committed suicide.
