Today, June 7, is National Donut Day. For those that love the sticky, doughy treats it's aday to celebrate. Whether you are a glazed, old fashioned, jelly or cream filled type of person, today is the day to fulfill any of your donut desires.

The Salvation Army established the holiday in 1938 as a fundraiser during the Great Depression and to support and honor the female volunteers who worked with soldiers on the front lines during World War I.

The Dutch first brought donuts to the U.S. with what they called oliekoeckento. "Apparently, holes were not a feature of the original donut and were added later on as a matter of function. The egg yolks in a donut weigh down the pastry and thus the hole makes for a richer, more firm treat," reported The Huffington Post.

Now, in 2013, many national chains are offering free donuts on this amazing day.
