A woman in Portage, Indiana found 17 puppies and a dog on the side of the road. Yahoo News reported that Karen Read came upon a car near Indiana Dunes State Park on Friday and when she got closer the car sped off and left the dogs.

"Porter County police are looking for a gold SUV that was seen driving off when Read drew near to the scene. When Read arrived, she called her husband and authorities to help capture the puppies in the dark. They were unable to secure the mother dog, but she was found over the weekend and taken to a county animal shelter," reported Yahoo News.

The puppies are mixed lab puppies in various colors and they are between the ages of 6 to 12 weeks and from two or three different litters.

CBS Chicago reported that animal control crews came and took the group of puppies to Lakeshore PAWS in Valparaiso where they are awaiting adoption.

Individuals who are interested in adopting the pups have to fill out an adoption survey and visit the shelter between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Coco's Canine Cabana at 405 Elm St. in Valparaiso, reported The Huffington Post.

"Anyone looking to adopt a puppy must fill out a survey on the Lakeshore PAWS website, and the fee to adopt will be $275. Over 100 calls have already come in from people interested in adoption, so hopefully, the abandoned puppies will soon all be in good homes," reported Yahoo News.

Read  said to CBS Chicago, "It was very cold that night, so I fear to think what would have happened to them if I hadn't come along right when I did."

"Good grief. I was really angry that night, and I'm trying not to be a judgmental person," Read said. "I don't know what kind of situation they were in, but I think it was a pretty reckless and callous act that they did."
