A double amputee from South Carolina has died after being attacked by four dogs. The Associated Press reported that Carlton Freeman, 81, from Harleyville, South Carolina was dragged from his wheelchair by dogs. He was reportedly driving his motorized char on May 8 when he was attacked, Maj. John Garson the spokesman for the Dorchester County Sheriff's Department said to the AP.

"An incident report said Freeman told authorities that he was pulled from his wheelchair during the attack in the community about 50 miles northwest of Charleston. He said dogs were biting him and pulling on his clothes."

Three of the four dogs have been captured and taken to an animal shelter while the fourth is located.

The AP reported that a police report stated that three of the dogs belonged to a woman who lived in the neighborhood.

From an injury years ago, Freeman had both his legs amputated. The coroner Chris Nesbit said to the AP that Freeman died from injuries that occurred from the dog attack.

"Upon my examination of Mr. Freeman, it is a wonder that this gentleman was able to hang on as long as he did," Nesbit said in a statement. "He had bites and lacerations from his legs to the top of his head. This is very sad story, but even worse that Mr. Freeman was basically helpless to the attack, due to being a bi-lateral amputee."

Heavy.com reported that authorities contacted 61-year-old Barbara Goodwin who owns three of the dogs but she said she didn't own the fourth missing dog. The police reporte said that all the dogs had blood in their fur. Neighbors reported that the dogs have been "roaming around the neighborhood for months."

In April 2012 a 2-month old child was killed by a dog in their family home while the baby's father slept in a room nearby.
