The polling service Gallup surveyed Americans throughout the country and asked if they felt safe walking home at night. In 2012, 72 percent of Americans who were surveyed said they felt safe walking home at night.

According to the survey 71 percent of people who live in bigger suburban areas felt safe, while 72 percent felt safe in the entire nation.

24/7 Wallstreet reported that the city of Stockton, California is where Americans feel the least safe with less than half of the surveyed people saying they felt comfortable walking around outside in the area after dark.

24/7 wallstreet looked at the top 10 cities where Americans feel the least safe at night based on Gallup's survey results.

"Of the 10 metropolitan statistical areas where the fewest people felt safe walking home at night, eight had crime rates above the national rate of 383.6 per 100,000 as of 2011," reported 24/7 Wallstreet. "Among these cities was Memphis, which had the nation's worst violent crime rate at just over 980 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. Stockton, with more than 820 violent crimes per 100,000 people, and Rockford, at more than 700 crimes per 100,000, also ranked high."

The city which dwellers feel the most safe is Minneapolis where 80 percent of its residents said they felt safe walking at night. Los Angeles also ranked high on the safe scale for residents with more than two-thirds of its residents saying they feel safe walking round at night.
