No one can deny that the New York Yankees have seen better days.

One of the oldest teams in baseball has been dealing with a lieu of injuries and the impeding retirement of, as one sports critic, Craig Carton states, "the greatest closer to play the game," in Marino Rivera, but what ESPN's commentator Doug Glanville  compared it too, came right out of left field.

While covering the spring-training game between the Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday, Glanville said, according to latinopost.com,  "they have basically Brokeback Mountain going over here. I mean everybody's on the disabled list or hurt in some form or fashion."

For those who may be unfamiliar with the reference, "Brokeback Mountain," according to imbd.com was an Oscar-winning film from 2009, which starred the late-great Heath Ledger, (also started in "10 Things I Hate About You") Jake Gyllenhaal, Ann Hathaway and Michelle Williams, that was controversial in part due to ledger and Gyllenhaal's portrayal of gay cowboys.

Apparently, Glanville, a former MLB player with the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers who became an ESPN color commentator in 2010, didn't see the film, or didn't think before speaking, but when one looks at it, he isn't off with the "brokeback" part of the title--the team is literally broken from head to toe.

The Yankees are dealing with injuries to Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira as well as GM Brian Cashman (who suffered injuries to both legs while skydiving), while Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera are coming back from serious injuries suffered late last year.

So, even though the term might have been inappropriate considering the premise of the movie, the point that the Yankees need to overcome more than a bit of adversity is true.
