One couple celebrating their first anniversary at a luxury hotel in Mexico made a shocking discovery - a peephole, with a clear view into both their bedroom and bathroom.

Sarah Edwards and her husband, David Traccitto, of Ontario, Canada, found the peephole in the bathroom of their room at the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya resort near Playa del Carmen, CBC News reported.

Soon after arriving in their room, they sensed something was not right.

"I just felt like someone was around me," Edwards told CBC News. "I heard what sounded like a latch opening, a door opening, and then moments later, a door shutting."

Later, Traccitto found a maintenance room that shared a wall with the bathroom of the suite he shared with his wife. A hole concealed behind the glazed glass shower console offered a clear view of the bathroom - and as shown by video the couple provided to CBC News, paint on the glazed glass appears to have been chipped away.

Following this discovery, the couple didn't waste time in leaving the hotel.

"He storms into the room and he's like, 'Oh, my God! Pack everything, pack everything up now!'" Edwards told CBC.

""You're not just seeing part of the shower wall and some blue glaze," she added. "You're seeing right through the glass, right through the blue glaze, right to genital level ... right in that shower. If the person is not in the shower, you can see directly into the king-size bed, the whole bed!"

Edwards told CBC she was concerned that someone was watching her and her husband - pointing out that they could've taken photos or video.

"I thought, 'My life is ruined,'" she said. "My personal life, my professional life, everything I've worked for in my life is gone."

Once the couple complained to the hotel, they were moved to another room, and received additional benefits, including free spa treatments as compensation.

Tour operator Transat Holidays told the couple in a letter that they had made a "goodwill attempt to resolve the issues," CBC reported, and that they considered the matter closed.

Although the operator has agreed to reimburse Edwards and Traccitto for the cost of the vacation, the couple told CBC News they're not sure whether they will accept it or not.
