Located in the city of Jūrmala, it once served as the home to, as its name suggests, Aspazija. But who exactly is Aspazija?

Who is Aspazija?

Aspazija is a celebrated Latvian poet and playwright. It is actually just a pen name. The real name of the poet is Elza Johanna Emilija Lizete Pliekšāne.

"The poetess-rebel stood for the woman of the new age - fiery, proud, independent, one who wants to shape her own life, be faithful to herself and her voice," the official travel website for Latvia says of Aspazija. "Together with her husband - poet and public figure Rainis, Aspazija brings modern spirit, new language, new symbols and sensuality to Latvian literature."

What to Expect

When visiting the House of Aspazija, you can expect a home-turned-museum that has remained largely unchanged through the decades. Given this, you can expect to be transported back to the 1930s once you enter the premises. You also get to meet Aspazija herself thanks to the museum's use of digital technology.

Original wprks of art as well as a guest salon, verandas, personal library, and memorial rooms dedicated to Aspazija and Rainis can be found in the museum. Aside from these, an interactive table can also be found in the home's dining room that includes games for both children and adults. These games are meant to introduce guests to Aspazija and her work.

Latvia Travel recommends the guests to use the audio guide, which allows "the poetess herself to introduce you to the secrets of her house." There is also a guided tour of the house that must be booked in advance by those who are interested to avail of the service.
