Schmidt's (Max Greenfield) first name has finally been revealed in "New Girl" Season 6 Episode 21 and it is Winston, the same name as his friend, Winston Bishop (Lamorne Morris). The producers revealed that there were actually a lot of iterations in Schmidt's first name.

According to a report from E! News, Schmidt finally revealed his first name to be Winston after some prodding from Cece Parekh (Hannah Simone). This is the first time in six seasons that Schmidt's first name was used in the series.

The report said that Schmidt's name was hidden because he and Bishop agreed 15 years ago that there shouldn't be two Winstons and Morris' character was the one who gets to keep his name. But Schmidt decided to embrace his full name even if it might cause some confusion with their friends and make Bishop angry.

And Bishop did get angry as he and Schmidt fought over the name physically throughout the episode. But Morris' character finally realised how badly his friend needed his first name so he finally agreed to it.

The funny thing about this is that "New Girl" executive producers Brett Baer and Dave Finkel didn't even have Winston as Schmidt's original first name. In an interview with TVLine, the producers revealed that throughout the course of six seasons, they had a lot of different first names for Greenfield's character.

Baer said that he and Finkel came up with an outline that Schmidt's name was to be revealed in "New Girl" Season 1 Episode 14. But they decided to hold it off, thinking it was too early for it. And the first name was actually Winston.

He said that it was early in season 5 when the name Winston came up and it was series creator Liz Meriwether who suggested it over lunch. Finkel said they were waiting for the right moment to reveal Schmidt's first name and decided to do it in season 6, considering they're not sure if there will be a season 7.

But it seems that Winston Schmidt would likely continue using his last name moving forward. A scene where Cece and Schmidt are in bed and exchanging I love yous becomes awkward because Cece can't get herself to say "I love you Winston" and Schmidt can't bear to hear it.

If that's the case, at least it's good to finally know one of the biggest mysteries in "New Girl." Check out the promotional photos in the video below of "New Girl" Season 6 Episode 22, it's season finale.
