Tekken 7 will be coming to the PS4, Xbox One, and PC on June 2, 2017. The release date was revealed in a new trailer for the game. Tekken fans have been waiting anxiously for an announcement from Namco-Bandai ever since the long-running fighter was first released in Japanese arcades last May 2015. This also marks the first time that the franchise will be playable on PC. The release date also presents a slight delay from the previous announcement of an early 2017 release date.

Tekken project head Katsuhiro Harada says the delay was a necessary one. In an interview with Gamespot, Harada says they were trying to have the game released by early 2017 so users could get their hands on the game as early as possible. "We saw some titles - some from our own company and some from others - which didn't have a very good launch because of a lack of content, or whatever it was, that caused players to bash the product", Harada said.

This quote is obviously referring to Capcom's "Street Fighter 5", which was released last year. While the game received praised for its improved mechanics, many players and game critics criticized the game for its lack of content upon its release. Capcom has yet to properly resolve this problem to this day. Harada and his team are looking to avoid this mistake by releasing the date much later than expected, so it is a risk that could pay off well for them.

Harada claims that this was not an easy decision to make. He apologized to fans for the delay saying the delay was the result of some hard decisions that the Tekken Project team had to make. "We realise it's not "early", I'm so sorry", Harada said.

Tekken has often been seen as one of the more polarizing fighting games out there. It has been criticized for its difficult learning curve and for being too combo heavy, but has still managed to sell well. According to CNET, the Tekken franchise has sold more than 42 million copies, which is much more than Street Fighter which has sold 38 million copies.
