"Beauty and the Beast" star Emma Watson was fated to be one of Disney's princesses. Playing the role of Disney princess is a dream role and not everybody gets the offer. Before the Belle role was offered to her, she was asked to play Cinderella in the 2015 live-action remake.
Kenneth Branagh's movie was turned down by Watson not knowing that "Beauty and the Beast" is in the works. According to the actress, when she was offered the role of the damsel opposite a beast, she felt that the role fits her. Personally, she wants to be like Belle because she remains inquisitive, open-minded and kind. She also explained, "There's this kind of outsider quality that Belle had and the fact she had this really empowering defiance of what was expected of her. In a strange way, she challenges the status quo of the place she lives in, and I found that really inspiring."
Lily James was cast as Cinderella together with Cate Blanchett and Richard Maden. In "Beauty and the Beast" Emma Watson wanted the film to be a collaborative process with director Bill Condon as reported by E! News. Aside from the modernization of her character, her wardrobe was also modified.
