Internal creative disputes is said to be the reason of his departure. Heat Street reported that Willimon focused on progressive political organization called the Action Group Network, which is an anti-Trump activist group.

During the four-year run of the political series under Willimon, "House of Cards" received positive reviews and received many awards and nominations. But with the show runner out of it, will the new team manage to maintain the good standing of the show?

With Willimon out of the show, Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese takes over as executive producers. But it is said that the new writers and producers are struggling to make the "House of Cards" season 5 better. Even the show's cast are allegedly unhappy about the plot of season 5 which is far from its original political storyline. However, Inquisitr reported that the show is confirmed to return on February or March 2017. Two new cast members, Patricia Clarkson and Campbell Scott, will also be joining the show. Their roles are not yet confirmed but the news about them being part of "House of Cards" gives a ray of hope to the show's fans that season 5 is not cancelled.
