Following Nintendo's success with Pokemon Go, console rival, Sony, aims to launch six games for smartphones beginning April of next year. The games will be initially available in Japan and then, eventually, in other Asian countries.

According to Reuters, a total of 10 mobile gaming titles are being worked on, including PaRappa the Rapper and Arc The Lad. The upcoming titles will free up some of Sony's famous franchises from their Playstation consoles to make them available to iOS and Android users. Sony's announcement came just a week before the launch of Nintendo's Super Mario Run.

While Nintendo reported disappointing sales of Wii consoles, Sony remained a decisive winner in console gaming. Sony's 40 million PlayStation sales are almost double the sales of another rival, Microsoft's XBox One.

Gaming analysts say Sony's chances of gaining major success may not be as high as Nintendo's due to the lack of powerful characters like Super Mario and Donkey Kong. Hideki Yasuda of Ace Research Institute said that Sony "has failed to invest consistently in its intellectual property, due partly to the company's recent focus on profits."

A lot of the franchises that Sony is planning to launch on mobile platforms are old and outdated. "Even if those mobile games successfully attract users, the same franchises cannot be played on current PlayStation consoles," Hideki added. "There will be little synergy between mobile and console gaming within Sony."

Sony has already released some games for smartphone users through its music entertainment, VentureBeat reported. But not mobile designated games through its PlayStation division. According to game experts, Nintendo and Sony are more likely to continue investing in their own main platforms, since smartphone games typically don't generate much revenue without a steady flow of in-app purchases.
