Facebook has introduced a Marketplace feature where people can buy and sell items in your local community.

According to Mary Ku, Director of Product Management, in the recent years Facebook has been used for buying and selling with each other via Facebook Groups.

"Today we're introducing Marketplace, a convenient destination to discover, buy and sell items with people in your community. Marketplace makes it easy to find new things you'll love, and find a new home for the things you're ready to part with. We'll continue to build new options and features to make this the best experience for people," she said.

Facebook will not be involved in the payment or delivery of items in Marketplace.

Marketplace was originally launched in 2007. Yahoo Finance wrote that after a year and a half, the social media "decided to revamp it by turning to classifieds startup Oodle to power the platform and further expand the functionality and breadth of the application." Later on, the version was shut down in 2014.

In coming days, Marketplace will be available in the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand. It will be ready for use on the Facebook app for both iPhone and Android.

"We will continue expanding to additional countries and make Marketplace available on the desktop version of Facebook in the coming months," Ku said in the company's blog.

BBC reported that Marketplace feature puts Facebook in forthright competition with other popular local online selling platforms.

"Facebook shares traded marginally higher on Monday in the US while shares in eBay fell by more than one percent", she added.

Browsing For An Item

Marketplace opens with photos of items for sale that people nearby have listed. You may search at the top and filter your results by price, location or category.

You may also search for a variety of divisions, including Household, Apparel and Electronics. To adjust the region you are looking in or switch into a different city, use the built-in location tool.

For your desired item, tap on the image to see more information from the seller.

To purchase the item, send a direct message to the seller from Marketplace and make an offer.
