For Lester Slate, there was only one way to celebrate his 90th birthday - by jumping out of a airplane.

The World War II veteran upheld a promise he made to himself when, under the guidance of a tandem jumper and accompanied by another skydiver trailing a U.S. flag, the 90-year-old skydived for the first time as a civilian at Pittsfield Airport on Sunday.

More than 50 of Slate's family and friends showed up for support.

Slate told The Bangor Daily News that he was inspired by former president George H.W. Bush, who jumped from an airplane on his 85th birthday in 2009.

Slate said he loved the experience and will do it again on his 95th or 100th birthday.

More crazy oldies

Last week on July 13, Thelma Gratsch celebrated her 90th birthday speeding on the tracks of a roller coaster at 80 mph at the Kings Island amusement park in Ohio.

When asked about the experience the lady said she has done it more than 100 times since it was launched in 2009. She said a roller coaster ride is one of the favorite things that she likes to do for the rest of her life.

The 230-foot-high steel ride is the tallest and fastest coaster at the park near Cincinnati. The park official said that she's the oldest guest to have taken a spin on the famous ride.
