Sustainable tourism is a concept of traveling with a conscious effort to protect the local culture and the environment. It aims to just bring out a positive experience for the visitor. How can we make sure that we become responsible travelers then?

First, use environment-friendly modes of transportation as much as possible. If you can take the train instead of an airplane, do it. Train uses less fuel than a place thus lowering your carbon footprint. Also, traveling by train gives a more scenic view of the place. While in the area, you can use a bicycle instead of a gasoline-powered vehicle.

Second, avoid using plastic often. When you are purchasing a snack in a grocery and you can just put your purchase inside your bag, politely decline the usage of a plastic bag. Cut back your usage of plastic bottles. Instead of buying bottled waters, try as much as possible to just bring a travel bottle that is free of bisphenol A. Also, carry your own tote bags when you shop at a local market.

Be aware of your surroundings. Respect the people and their culture. Listen to them. Ask about the dos and don'ts of the place and follow them.

Now, buy your souvenirs and food from the local townspeople. Yes, their product is not as cheap as those in large malls. However, a purchase from these people ensures that you are directly contributing to the local economy. For example, buy handicrafts that are handmade by the natives instead of cheaper ones that are imported from some other country.

Lastly, don't even dare purchase wildlife products. It is tempting to get leather made out of an endangered species. With every purchase though, you are encouraging local people to exploit endangered species for souvenirs. If someone goes to you and offers you a "rare" souvenir, be responsible and say no.
