Thailand cuisine is a palate pleaser. Although generally spicy, travelers would truly appreciate the fusion of Eastern and Western flavors. Food in this region is not only delicious but also beautiful.

Som Tam (Green Papaya Salad)

Som tam is shredded unripe papaya that is cooked in a concoction of lime, chili, fish sauce, dried shrimp and palm sugar. It is usually served hot and spicy in Thai streets. Due to its popularity with tourists though, a milder version can be requested.

Gaeng Keaw Wan Gai (Green Chicken Curry)

Spicy and savory play in the tongue for every spoonful of this curry. This coconut curry's green color is attributed to green chilies. For that savory taste, chicken is added. It is usually eaten with steaming white rice and lemongrass tea.

Tom Yum (Boiled Spicy and Sour Soup)

This dish is so popular that neighboring Asian countries such as Brunei, Cambodia, Malaysia and Singapore are making their own version. The most popular variety is tom yum goong, soup with prawns. Other varieties are with fish, chicken, mixed seafood and pork. Modern versions have mushrooms to add an umami taste profile.

Khao niao mamuang (Sticky Rice with Mango)

This dessert never fails travelers with sweet tongue. Sticky rice is cooked with coconut milk. The cooked rice is served with fresh ripe mango. For a full Thai experience, eat it like a local. Roll the rice with the fingers and scoop up the mango slices.

Phat Thai (Fried Noodles)

A visit in Thailand is not complete without a taste of this fried noodle dish. It is flat noodles cooked in prawn and tamarind sauce, topped with peanuts, fresh vegetable, chili flakes and lime. While the mixed seafood version is the most popular, tourists can also request beef, chicken, pork and even vegetarian ones. Almost every street corner sells one. Just look out for an eatery with a long queue.
