Selena mosque ankle photo has offended the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. The offending Selena mosque ankle photo showed Gomez flashing her ankle inside the mosque and the former Disney star therefore had to spend at least part of the New Year dealing with the controversy.

The "The Heart Wants What It Wants" singer was with friends, including Kendall Jenner, Cody Simpson and Gigi Hadid. During the Dec. 29 trip to Abu Dhabi mosque, they posed for several Instagram photos, irking some who called their poses disrespectful.

It's not only the "Come and Get It" singer criticized for the Selena mosque ankle photo, her friends are also being heavily criticized for their behavior while they were there.

The Selena mosque ankle photo has since been deleted by the pop star. The pop star flashed the bottom part of her leg in a hot pose.

According to TMZ, mosque leaders found the pose "disrespectful."

It is reportedly stated in the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque visitor website that "modest, conservative, loose fitting clothing" is required for guests, and women are instructed to wear skirts that are "ankle length."

Of course, the Selena mosque ankle photo wasn't intentional and the 22-year-old didn't to make offense with the pose. She probably only wasn't aware that such things were forbidden in the area.

As such, the famous singer got most of the criticism as she posted the now-deleted Selena mosque ankle photo. Her Instagram followers started sharing their piece on the snapshot, and many called the singer's pose offensive.

"I was just thinking, why purposely go to a sacred place and do something considered disrespectful?" one user wrote, reported Us Weekly.

Gomez decided to keep mum about the whole issue, deleted the Selena mosque ankle photo and just left a group photo from the Abu Dhabi visit.

A photo of Gomez and her friends at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque still remains up on her Instagram account, reports the Huffington Post.

However, the group photo, showing off their gang's biggest smiles and fun poses, according to Hollywood Life, are apparently also prohibited. The mosque reportedly bans laughing and smiling out of respect.

According to Fox News, a rep for Gomez did not immediately return FOX411's request for comment on the Selena mosque ankle photo.

The Selena mosque ankle photo may have received quite some backlash, but according to Hollywood Life, this experience is still considered lucky. Rihanna, who visited the same mosque in 2013, was reportedly kicked out after she posted pics of her visit.
