1. Sit by a stranger on the train.

Growing up we are all told not to talk to strangers; however, you can meet some of the most amazing people this way.  Just say good morning and strike up a conversation.  Ask them if they have always lived in this city, what they do, etc.  Sometimes they will give you handy tips for visiting the city like hidden places, good restaurants, good visiting times, areas of town to avoid.  You might even meet a national team player!

2. Go to a Starbucks.

Yes, we have those here the United States, and why go somewhere that you can go to in America when there are so many small cafes to visit?  Well firstly, it will taste much better than any American Starbucks you have had, and there is probably a drink on the menu that is not served in the United States.  Experience how this country's food culture adapts to an American staple.  The barista might even write your name in the language and who doesn't want their name written in a foreign language!! (Also, there is free wifi.)

3. Don't take a lot of photos.

I know, I know. This goes against every instinct we have to capture all the amazing sites we see, but in ten years will we really remember what that photo of a random tree is about???  My challenge is to take photos of some really worthwhile sights and of you and your friends/family in interesting places.  Just don't be taking snaps at every turn.  You will actually miss the beauty and entrancement that you came to see.  While you have the photo it has no true meaning to you.  Stop for a moment, put your camera away, and just soak in the sight.

4. Eat on a budget.

At least for a day.  (Trust me I want to eat at the super expensive places too.) It will force you to find little places that are tucked away.  Many times these places have some of the best food you will try and offer more traditional foods.  You may even have to go to the grocery store/ local market.  Then you can experience an aspect of life for the locals.  Most likely you will find some interesting foodstuff that you will want to try!

5. Get lost!

Make sure to pack a map first, so you can make it home!  Just get in the car, or tram or metro or whatever and go.  Get off somewhere that looks interesting and explore the neighborhood.  Eat lunch there or stop for a coffee break somewhere else. Explore and discover what the city has to offer.  If you get super lost just ask a local to help, and you may learn some cool info about where you are or maybe just the lifesaving directions....
