England fans attacked in Sao Paulo happened on the eve of their 2014 World Cup World Cup clash with Uruguay on Thursday afternoon. The England fans attacked in São Paulo has been confirmed as to have been initiated by Brazil's hooligans inside bars in Sao Paulo before the Thursday's game with Uruguay began.

Globo reported that England fans attacked in Sao Paulo occurred as a hooded group of attackers used bottles, knives, fireworks and knuckle-dusters on England supporters near the Fifa Fan Fest in the downtown district of Anhangabaú Valley on Thursday afternoon.

According to The Guardian, a firecracker was thrown at the English before Military Police arrived and stopped the assault. Military police said, "A bomb was thrown against England fans who were at the Guanabara Bar and Fruit Planet snack bar."

An eye-witness who was present as England fans attacked in Sao Paulo by hooligans happened said, "The guys jumped on a bus to try to escape, and then the police went after them."

Fifteen people have been arrested after the incident of England fans attacked in Sao Paulo occurred. Police reportedly took six rockets, a knuckle-duster, a dagger and other fireworks from the attackers.

According to the Huffington Post UK, the Brazilian hooligans who had England fans attacked in Sao Paulo claimed to be part of a Corinthians "Organizado" fan group. Due to the group having England fans attacked in São Paulo, police reportedly detained the 15 attackers and seized weapons they used.

Brazilian police have released the group shortly after being detained.  

The fan group defended their act of having England fans attacked in Sao Paulo claiming that they were provoked. According to Globo however, the accused have not been required to give a statement before their release.

While the British Consulate said they are aware of the incident of England fans attacked in Sao Paulo, they are not informed of any casualties.

A statement from the British Consulate read, "We are aware of an incident affecting fans around the area of the Fan Festival in Sao Paulo. We are working with the local authorities to establish the facts. No British nationals are believed to have been injured."

Despite the incident of England fans attacked in Sao Paulo, England's footballers reportedly continue being the butt of jokes online. Many posts are reportedly from Portugal and Spain.

On Twitter, a @humor_esportivo said, "England invented football. They must have lost the playing instructions."

Another took to the social networking site as well and said, "What a crazy world cup, when even Rooney scores but Ronaldo fails to hit the net."
