(Video) Actress Ellen Page Comes Out As A Lesbian

Feb 15, 2014 09:31 AM EST

The Juno actress has come out as a lesbian at the Human Rights Campaign Time to Thrive Conference. HRC praised her decision to "live openly and authentically."

Superstar actress Page gave an emotional speech at the conference, where she spoke about the "crushing standards" of Hollywood and the pressure to "feel, act and look a certain way."

"If we took just five minutes to recognise each other's beauty, instead of attacking each other for our differences. That's not heard. It's really an easier and better way to live. And, ultimately, it saves lives."

She continued: "I draw upon your strength and support in ways that you will never know. And I am here today because I am gay."

This announcement was met with rapturous applause and a standing ovation by the convention attendees.

The actress, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Juno will join other openly gay celebrities, such as Ellen Degeneres and Michael Sam, to help break down barriers and stigma surrounding coming out.

Page remarked that she was tired of hiding her true self.

"My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered, and my relationships suffered," she said. "And I'm standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain."

Page says she hopes her decision to come out publicly will be an inspiration and that she wants to join the fight to help the LGBT community as an "honest and open person."
