Giant WTC Spire Arrives in New Jersey on a Barge from Canada

The giant spire that will top 1 World Trade Center is making its way to New York as the WTC nears completion. 

The spire that will sit on top of the new building is finally on its way from Canada after a financial dispute with its manufacturer, ADF Steel, was settled, according to the Daily Mail. It is being transported to Manhattan on a barge in eight separate sections. It left Quebec on Nov. 16 and it arrived at Port Newark in New Jersey on Friday.

The delivery of the antenna was slightly delayed due to a lawsuit in which the Port Authority accused ADF of holding the spire hostage as they claimed they were owed $6 million from another WTC project. The issue was resolved last month.

The $10 million antenna is made up of 18 sections that weigh between five and 67 tons. The remaining 10 sections will be transported by truck in December, according to the Associated Press.

The tower is expected to be completed by March, but that would have been delayed if the spire was not delivered at this time as the St. Lawrence river, which it traveled on typically freezes during the winter.It will take three months to install the 750 ton spire. Once the tower is complete with the 408-foot-tall spire, the entire building will measure 1,776 feet. It will be the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.
