NYC 'Derecho' Storm July 26 2012 : Amazing Storm Photos from Twitter

Jul 26, 2012 10:30 PM EDT

Another powerful summer storm hit the New York City area, which was captured in some stunning photos that were shared on Twitter.

On July 26, weather services announced that a wild storm would hit New York in the evening. New Yorkers were told to brace for a "derecho" storm, a rare phenomenon in which a thunderstorm brings winds that are so strong they can cause tornado-like damage and the possibility of hail. A storm this strong can bring winds up to 70 miles per hour.

Upstate New York was hit pretty hard by the threatening storm. The National Weather Service received unconfirmed reports of a tornado in Elmira, New York. The town of Chemung County reported blown-off roofs, downed power lines and uprooted trees. In Dutchess County, 20,000 people lost power.

In New York City, the storm didn't hit as hard, but New York Twitter users were able to capture some movie-like photos of the clouds above the city as the storm approached.

Photographer Inga Sarda-Sorensen (@isardasorensen) , who often captures amazing shots, posted the following photo with the caption "Monster storm rips through #NYC tonight."

Twitter user NYC Daily Pictures (@NYCDailyPics) posted the following photo of the storm above the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

The NYC Mayor's Office (@NYCMayorsoffice) posted the following photo with a warning saying "Severe storm headed toward NYC. Now is the time to get inside."

User Michael Surtees (@MichaelSurtees) captured the following photo of the clouds over Manhattan.

Radio personality Skeery Jones (@SkeeryJones) from the New York radio station Z100 posted this photo of the storm above the New York City skyline, relating it to the fictional Batman city of Gotham and explaining how the storm caused his cable to go out. "LOOK at this ominous sky over Gotham City...and right on cue, my @DIRECTV goes out!
