May 28, 2016 06:00 AM EDT

The American actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson could have been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As Gibson has been offered to portray the role of Odin - Thor's father.

While Gibson was promoting his upcoming action thriller film - Blood Father, Gibson was asked if he was approached to be part in a superhero film, Gibson said in a statement to The Guardian, "Yeah, long time ago, to play Thor's dad."

When Gibson turned down the offer, the role was eventually given to the Academy Award Best Actor winner - Anthony Hopkins, IGN reports.

It could have been an advantage for Gibson to be part Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he could've joined his close friend Robert Downey Jr, who portrays Tony Stark or Iron Man.

Gibson isn't fully in opposition to superhero films. When the actor was asked about the popularity of superhero movies nowadays, Gibson revealed his points of view about the subgenre of blockbusters, according to Slash Film.

"Some are good. Some are kind of funny ... Guardians of the Galaxy. Or the first Iron Man, Gibson stated. "And some of them are just like retreats. I mean you can watch them do Spider-Man five times..."

Then Gibson's remarks pointed to the state of the production of movies in general.

"There is a slight shift in the motion picture. But, then again, I think all movies are suffering from individuals not being able to now open them with their name. It's a different kind of business these days...I think you used to get more variety of stories, films and performances. You had more of a chance of a profound film experience. But that's not gone."

However, Gibson wasn't the only actor who almost had a role in the Thor film. Joel Kinnaman, Brad Pitt, Channing Tatum, Charlie Hunnam and Alexander Skarsgard were among the actors considered to play the mighty Thor, according to Film-News.

Even Liam Hemsworth tested for the character, but the role ended up with Chris Hemsworth.
