iPhone 6 Bending: ‘Bend Gate’ Phenomenon, Owners Report iPhone Bending Inside Pockets, Will Apple Replace Bent Phones? [VIDEOS + REPORT]

Sep 25, 2014 11:08 AM EDT

The phenomenon which has owners reporting of their iPhone 6 bending has already been dubbed 'Bend Gate'. According to multiple reports, the credibility of Apple is now being questioned since many new owners of the handset have reported their new iPhone 6 bending, and just from being carried inside their pockets.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, reports of the new iPhone 6 bending in people's pockets have currently put into question Apple's status as the king in consumer technology.

While the tech giant has yet to respond to the issue, pictures are surfacing of the new iPhone 6 unintentionally bending after staying inside people's pockets. Photos are on Twitter, while videos showing the iPhone 6 bending are shown via YouTube.

According to the Independent, one bold user by the name "Unbox Therapy" even sacrificed his own handset just to prove that the new iPhone 6 Plus does bend and may thus need more care as compared to other phones in the market.

Watch the daring YouTuber's test below and see how his iPhone 6 actually bent from pressure.

The trend only started after specialist site MacRumours reported one Apple owner's story of his iPhone 6 bending after he reportedly put it in his pocket and attended a wedding.

The incensed Apple customer detailed, "The 6 Plus was about 18 hours in my pocket while sitting mosty. As I lay it on the coffee table and sat down on the couch to relax from the drive (yes, sitting again), I saw the reflection of the window in the iPhones slightly distorted."

According to the SMH, Apple has positioned its new line of smartphones as "pushing the edge of design", with its thinnest body yet at 6.9 millimetres. Meanwhile, the iPhone 6 is measured at 7.1 millimetres.

The company reportedly claims that the new iPhone's "hardware and software function" are "in perfect unison, creating a new generation of iPhone that's better by any measure". However, they probably did not expect several of their slender iPhone 6 bending with their choice of aluminium body.

Quite many of the people who excitedly bought their new handsets have been disappointed in finding out that the new iPhones could not live up to the company description. Several owners have posted photos on the MacRumors site showing the problem, reports the BBC. A Geek.com reporter also reported of his phone getting warped.

Meanwhile, some bloggers said the problem with the iPhone 6 bending is a matter of physics, since thin aluminium bends.

Canadian blogger Lewis Hilsenteger broke his handset's screen when he tried to bend it back into place.

Below is his video.

With Apple having gained an estimated 74.1 per cent on the $869 16GB iPhone 6, the thin aluminium that came with the cost reduction might be hard to swallow for many buyers, especially as cheaper smartphones in the market have been found to have sturdier frames.

Though several other rival phones have been bent in the past, unfortunately for Apple, the price of their phones leaves little excuse for mistakes.

According to the SMH, online publication "Cult Of Mac" listed the following phones bent over the years: Samsung Galaxy S4, iPhone 5s, Sony Xperia Z1, iPhone 5, BlackBerry Q10, HTC EVO, Oppo and iPhone 4s.

But the question remains, with the number of reports of the iPhone 6 bending, will Apple replace these bent phones?

Apparently, Apple has not and would not comment whether they will be replacing or refunding customers whose phones had bent.

According to the BBC, currently experts are divided whether Apple should respond to owner reports of the iPhone 6 bending.

The Independent reports that though Twitter have had several pictures filled with bent iPhones, the actual number of affected users are limited. Tech experts also said that the issue isn't a sole problem of Apple devices. it actually only shows that the problem lies in how people treat their gadgets casually.

All Apple hardware has a one-year warranty which reportedly does not cover "damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, liquid contact, fire, earthquake or other external cause". However, it does warrant "against defects in materials and workmanship when used normally in accordance with Apple's published guidelines", reports the SMH.

As of the current moment, the issue of whether it's reasonable or careless when one carries an expensive phone in a pocket (which results in some people's iPhone 6 bending), is still up for debate.

Apparently, Apple has already set a new sales record with the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, after they sold 10 million handsets in the weekend following the Sept. 19 launch.

However, the iPhone 6 bending still begs the questions as to whether the phones are simple glitches in the system, or a bigger problem with the design of the phone in general.
