With only a few episodes left until the series finale of "The Vampire Diaries" airs, a released teaser finally reveals that Elena Gilbert is back. The very short teaser featured Nina Dobrev, the actress playing Elena asking what happened and why was she there right now.

Fans will remember that Elena is supposed to be asleep. She sacrificed herself two seasons ago for her best friend Bonnie. And as long as Bonnie is alive, Elena will have to be in a magically-induced coma. EOnline reports that Elena will wake up during the final episode of the series, which will air on March 10, with the title "I Was Feeling Epic."

Since the announcement that season 8 would be the last for "The Vampire Diaries," fans have been waiting for news if Dobrev will be back to play the character that made her a household name all over the world. It will be remembered that the actress left the show in season 6, and she has only been mentioned in passing in the next two seasons.

Loyal viewers of the series finally got their answer after the actress herself posted a photo on Instagram, indicating that she is indeed back for the series finale of the much-loved show. She will not be the only former character to return, though. Digital Spy reports that Steven R. Mcqueen will be back to play the role of Jeremy Gilbert as well.

The question that needs to be answered is why Elena was woken up early. IF things went as planned, she should still be asleep for more than 50 years at least. Also, how is she able to wake up given that in the recent teasers, Bonnie is alive and well.
