The night of June 8, 1708, was moonless and smothering with little in the way for wind to fill the gigantic sails of the Spanish treasure ship San Jose as it moved in the quiet waters off the shore of Cartagena, Colombia. Not far off, scarcely obvious in the quick blurring light, a British warship streaked toward the Spanish vessel, gradually but steadily making progress.
