Russia may officially celebrate Christmas on January 7 but the holiday spirit is already felt throughout the country come December. During this time of the year, tourists flock the land not only for the sightseeing but also the unique finds one can bring back as Yuletide gifts.

There's more to Russian souvenirs than Matrioshkas, the very popular nesting dolls everyone gets to see just about anywhere. To keep things a tad bit different and unforgettable, here are some of the best items one can get from the country and place under the tree back home.

1. Palekh miniatures

Palekh miniatures otherwise known as lacquer boxes are beautifully hand-painted with bright colors and extremely detailed designs. These boxes are very expensive in the US, costing over a hundred dollars. Russia is the place where you'll find it most reasonably priced and very well represents a slice of the country's past.

History tells that the people of Palekh village resorted to making other items, such as the Palekh boxes drawn with Russian fairy tales since the Bolsheviks did not share the same passion and belief in God.

2. Military souvenirs

History buffs and collectors could get quite lucky when they come to Russia in search of military memorabilia. Communist era hats and other souvenirs are readily available in various public markets and are affordable as well.

3. Gzhel

For tourists who want to give their ceramic-savvy loved ones something that's truly unique, Gzhel would be the best pick for the season.

These white and blue ceramic figurines and plates are seen throughout the country and a great addition to anyone's growing collection of tableware. They would also come in forms of bracelets and other accessories.

4. Khokloma

If travelers fancy wooden tableware instead of ceramic ones, then Khokloma would be a great choice. These aren't meant only to be displayed but are encouraged to be used in the table. Designs are very simple but perfectly done, like drawings of gold leaves or red berries.

An additional tip here is to go to markets and find these items. Don't be afraid to haggle, as it's always great to get something at the best possible value.
