The answer is: the man who has been taking a mass media beating (figuratively, over the past week.

Who is Matt Lauer?

Correct.

For a man who has seen his public image hit an all-time low, the "Today" host, according to New York Post, is the front-runner to replace Alex Trebek on "Jeopardy!" after he steps down in 2016.

Last year Lauer, who has been on "Today since 1994 and become host in 1997, signed a multi-year deal with NBC worth $25 million per year, according to Daily Mail.

If Lauer is interested, it might be hard to leave, considering NBC News president Steve Capus told the New York Times, "Matt is the franchise, and our franchise player has decided to keep leading our team."

However, though he might be getting courted by Cue Sony Pictures Television (production team of "Jeopardy") one problem stopping his appointment could be his falling star.

Since the early 2012 contract signing, things have gotten worse by the day for "Today," as the show has lost its 16-year edge on "Good Morning America" and Lauer is believed to the reason, due to many thinking he orchestrated ouster of Ann Curry.

He isn't the only one on the list, New York Post reported on Thursday that  that there's a "Jeopardy!" host short list which also includes Anderson Cooper, whose contract also apparently runs out next year and is already spending time in syndication-land as CNN retools itself.

On the morning-news front, Lauer's new co-host, Savannah Guthrie swears things are actually great over at "Today". "Everything's good. We're hanging in. It's better than the press would have you believe," she told New York Times' Stuart Elliott.

Businessinsider.com stated that to that quote, "Jeopardy!" fans might answer: This fired female host of a once-popular morning show set the stage for a predecessor who was afraid to say anything bad about her reviled draconian co-host. Who is Ann Curry? Correct.
