For many travelers, particularly bookworms, bookstores are part of their itineraries when they travel. However, bookworm or not, there is a bookstore that is a must-visit when in Porto, Portugal. 

Why? We're not just talking about how it's rumored to have inspired J.K. Rowling to write "Harry Potter." We're talking about how it is often regarded as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the whole of Europe, even in the whole wide world. 

The bookstore is none other than Livraria Lello & Irmão, otherwise known as Lello Bookshop.

Livraria Lello History

Believe it or not, Livraria Lello has been around since 1906! Specifically, the building where it stands today was inaugurated on January 13, 1906. Designed by Francisco Xavier Esteves, it is located at Number 144 at Rua das Carmelitas. 

The building of a bookstore is an example of neo-Gothic architecture that can be found in Portugal. Its most iconic feature is its staircase, which was actually originall brown in color. However, in 1993, an error during restoration work resulted in a crimson-colored staircase.

Another notable feature of the building is the stained glass ceiling, which was done by the Dutch master Samuel Van Krieken. It is made up of a total of 55 panels.

How to Get to the Bookstore 

Livraria Lello is accessible either by foot, by metro, by bus, or by car. It is also relatively convenient to get to the bookstore straight from the airport.

Visitors should take note that the bookstore is open every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, it is closed on certain days, which are as follows:

  • January 1
  • Easter Sunday
  • May 1
  • June 24
  • December 25

If you are looking to visit the bookstore during its off-peak hours, it is during lunch time and in the late afternoon. 

Areas to Take Note Of 

There is much to see and marvel at when visiting Livraria Lello. However, there are certain areas that may be of interest especially for bookworms. 

One of the areas is known as Gemma, which is where you can find the bookstore's rare books, first edition copies, and other valuable works. Visitors must note that access to Gemma is is done by appointment and is subject to approval by Livraria Lello. 

Another notable area of the bookstore is known as the José Saramago Room. One of the most prolific Portuguese writers, José Saramago is likewise known around the world. First editions of his works can be found in this area, as well as works translated into different languages.
